Ok, So this semeseter I am a sophemore in college.  Last year I had a meal plan but this year I am in on-campus apartments and those dont come with a meal plan.  So this year I have been buying my own food.  I have a couple of emotional issues especially within this last year because my family is going through a lot of stuff.

I havent been eating well and I recognize now that I overeat when I get upset.  So I officially made a commitment to myself yesterday to start eating healthier, I went to the store after I completely killed my food supply so that I could start fresh, then I bought healthy food and food that comes in portions.

I have been counting calories, not because I think that less calories make it healthier, I know that i need to balance, but I also know that i have a problem with overeating, so this is to stop me from just eating and eating.

My question is, about how many calories is healthy for a 19 year old female  and how many is too few?

I realize you guys arent doctors, i am just looking for people who have done this sort of things before....

So, anyone?

I would think that a 2000-2500 calorie diet would be right for you.  I don't know if you have regular exercise, but if you don't, I would drop it down to about 2000 calories per day.

That's just my speculation, of course.  Personally, I don't actually bother counting.  I just know what should be reasonable, and I only buy things that have lower calorie counts anyway.  I do try to pay attention to the grams of fat, however, and usually avoid having more than 25-30 of those per day, usually less.

Either way, if you look at all the nutrition labels on food, they typically say something like, "based on a 2000 calorie diet".

It really depends on your lifestyle as well though.  If you have a more physical lifestyle, then you'll need more calories to support that.

anywhere from 2000 to 2500 is healthy number of calories. It really depends on your lifestyle active or sedentary. before starting a diet you should always talk to your doctor.

It's a bit difficult to say because you didn't tell us if you exercise regularly or how active you are in general throughout the day. I would calculate your BMR and then add calories to it depending on how active you are. In case you didn't already know, your BMR is the amount of calories that you need just to function properly. It's based purely on gender, height, weight, and age, so you have to factor in your activity level.

You can calculate that here:

Good luck! I think it's great that you're trying to make healthy changes. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions. I've gone through being both overweight and underweight before, so I know how difficult it can be at times.
