Yes, but not to the extent that it is today.  Prior to the discovery the New World and the exploitation of New World resources, Europe was already very well off and had been since the High Middle Ages.  Granted, around 1300 Europe's agriculture was unable to sustain its population of around 100 million individuals (highest of any region in the world at the time - even greater than India and China) and thus the economy was stagnant in its trying to produce enough grain and the like for everybody to eat.  When famine and the Black Plague hit, the population fell considerably, which allowed people who were previously stuck farming to engage in other activities like wine production, ship building, and other things more, hence diversifying the European economy and which is why Europe's economy around 1450 was by far more healthy than around 1300.

It should also be noted that with that diversification, it allowed for the exploration of the world.  Europe wasn't just some backwater of the world until it got rich off the New World - the whole Dark Ages myth is a lot of bullshit.  Europe was a rather prosperous region of the world with its ups and downs like anywhere else.  With its superiority to the rest of the world in optics, astronomy / navigation, and gradually in shipbuilding, it's no coincidence that the Europeans came to dominate, and thus exploit it over the centuries.  It wouldn't have reached the point to be able to do so without some success prior to that.
