In the last two days -- LiveWire Teen Forums

I worked at a pet store for a few months (ended up quitting) and i had a few people come in who i just wanted to smack! the first one was when i was still training (one of my 4 shifts before they left me alone) and she came in asking about Turtles. She has recently bought a turtle. Now here is the part that annoys me (which seems to be everything else), she didn't know what type of turtle it was (eg, paint, mud), didn't know what gender it was, with not knowing what type it was, she also started asking us, what it should eat, how big it should get, how much water/land ratio it should have, does it need a heat lamp, and other questions like that. Well if SHE doesn't know what type of turtle it is how were WE supposed to help her. The most we could say was google it, and i offered what i new about mud turtles (from when i was considering getting one and I spent HOURS researching them. and we had a book about all kinds of turtles and how to care for them (everything she was asking) for $11.00 (I don't know what that is in pounds sorry) and she wouldn't buy it because it was too expensive. well.... i'm pretty sure turtles are AT LEAST 40$ each, let alone everything you need for it. So unless she is keeping it in the box they give it to you in, she has already spend at least $100.00... and she couldn't drop $11.00 on a book that would tell her everything she was asking us and more! Uge!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!(must not swear) I wanted to smack her!!!

And then a few weeks ago, someone came in and they had rats (yay another ratty person) but they kept in in an average size, one level, rabbit cage for two full grown rats ( we have our rabbits in the big version of that cage, and they don't move around nearly as much and then both get free range times hours at a time), they didn't know how old they where, and the best part was, they didn't know what gender they were except they were two of the same gender as there were no baby rats yet. Well last I checked, males are pretty easy to sex, and she said she got them from a pet store, so even if she got them "fixed" (which I HIGHLY doubt) the vet would have said what gender it was.

Uge!!! I absolutely HATE people like that!! Like I understand no body can know everything about the pet they have/want. and I'm sure that's why a lot of people on pet forums originally joined, so they can ask advice. But to not know what type of turtle your getting? or the gender of your pet? I just.... I don't understand how someone can not know that! those are the first things you should be looking at!

Maybe I'm over reacting because as I said I'm one of the people that even if I'm just considering getting a new pet I spend hours researching them. When I wanted to get a turtle i spend about 3 hours researching all pet turtle types before narrowing it down to the Mud turtle that I wanted (because they don't get as big as most types... or so the sites told me) and then I spent weeks looking up information on them. and I didn't even end up getting turtles, i ended up getting rats. I just... I don't understand how someone can just get an animal and not even prepare themselves for what this animal needs to survive. Like... why? Especially in today's world were we have the internet which has SOO many places to find answers and information on, Plus all the books that are out there, and some pet stores do have knowledgeable staff (I say some people one pet store said getting a Fire bellied toad to put with a Chinese water dragon would be 100% ok for both of them. Luckily my friend said he wanted to think about it and when i got home i asked my cousin who has 2 fire bellies toads and she told me not to because they have poisonous skin that will even poison the water and the dragon would get sick and probably die just by the toad sitting in the pond)
