Things could have been great, and he could very well still want to spend his life with you, but now obviously isn't a good moment in his life to spend with you.

It's also entirely possible that he was thinking, feeling, saying, and doing these things because that's what he felt he was supposed to do for you. Especially when couples date for a while (and you two were together for over a year!) we get into a routine, and it isn't until we stop to think about "is this REALLY what I want" that we realize that this isn't right for us, and we take a stand. Him talking about marriage and children with you is good, but sometimes we just fall into the habit of talking about them because we've talked about them in the past, regardless of if it's still what we want or not.
