Someone was talking about how a friend of their parents whose son died in Iraq or something war related. Anyway, they were like "everyone was so shocked ..."

EXCUSE ME for sounding insensitive, but if you're going to join the Army, you'd better be prepared to die, and make sure the family is aware of this mortal fact.

It's ridiculous to think you're going to come out of war unscathed; oh if we hope and pray hard enough he'll be okay ... NOT HE WON'T!!! There is never any guarantee. It's like praying you won't get lung cancer every time you light up a cigarette

Wrong. The vast majority of those who serve do not die. Its bound to be a shock, because no-one thinks it'll be their relatives who cop it...

EXACTLY. No body ever thinks it's gonna be them, when they should be prepared, just in case it IS them.

He died trying to kill. I am not a pacifist, I just don't get why everyone is in denial about the fact that a relative may die AT WAR.

A marine is more likelybto die in a car accident than at war.

Every time you enter a vehicle you should not expect to get out again and no one should be shocked if that's the last time they see you alive.

Your parents, family, and friends should all be educated and you along with them should realize that dying is just a part of driving.

Exactly, my father's in the army, and a friend of ours just recently went on his 3rd tour in Iraq- nothing has happened to him thus far.

Like he said, it's like virginia tech- you know stuff like that happens, but when you think of the odds of it happening to you or someone you know, it seems unlikely. They know the risk, but at the same time, it's like out of all these people, what are the odds of it happening to me?

But I kinda do agree about the be prepared to die part- as stated above, you don't know WHAT will happen, so it's best to be ready either way.

Nobody ever thinks it will be them, but if it is them they and everyone dear to them should feel as though it was the expected outcome. That person chose to drive in a vehicle, how could his death possibly be shocking?

By that standard every time a police officer, or a teacher, or any worker who works with people goes out each day, they should tell their families they may die.

No.

Look, what happens in war? People shoot each other, bomb each other, there is constant tension.
they expect to win the war; that involves either the other side holding up a white flag, or them killing people until they can't fight anymore.
the other side wants to win, too.
I'm just amazed at how people are like "he died whilst fighting in Iraq?! but he was a soldier!!1"

I think you'll find that it's a shock when anyone's relative or friend or someone close to them dies, regardless of whether or not it's something you should just be prepared for.

Particularly with the war in Iraq. It's much harder to feel an immediate sense of danger when we at home are barely affected at all. No amount of being "prepared" for the possible death of a family member in the army (or elsewhere) would actually take away the shock of it if it DOES happen. The vast majority of people fighting are NOT dying. It is shocking when it happens, and there's no way of getting out of that and no way of preparing yourself enough for it. Simple as.
