I've never heard of AVG giving people viruses.  That said, http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html, would definitely be the best bet if you're not looking to pay. It's quite amazing, and easy to use. :)
I actually got it on Livewire. there was a time where David had these stupid popups coming up, and some of them had trojans.
One of them was an AVG Popup, and it gave me a trojan.

Either Bitdefender free version or Avast. The only two I would use and therefore recommend.
