I won't be in college until next Summer (becoming a state resident first), so I've been occasionally sitting in on some classes at UW-Milwaukee.  Yesterday, I went to Social Psych, an Africology class, Philosophy of Religion, and Philosophy topics: The Meaning of Life.  Everything is just so interesting.  I know I'll be majoring in psych, but I've been thinking about doing philosophy as well.  It just makes me so much more excited to go back to school.

I'm glad you're excited for it.  I took a year off between highschool and college to work to get money and to help estabilish my residency.  Are you sure your residency is guaranteed next summer?  I thought it would only take me one year, but it became more complicated because my parents weren't there.  I had to live in the state for two years, and on top of that support myself (meaning I couldn't get any financial assistance from ~anyone~).  It ended up being a lot more complicated than I thought it would be, lol.

I think that I'll be fine.  I talked to the admissions people briefly and they said that I would just need to prove my residency.  I can do that by showing them my apartment lease.

I had talked to them too... and some people don't always know what they're talking about...

But as long as you're sure you're set.  The school I go to is very particular.  So even if you've DEFINITELY been living here, it doesn't guarantee you residency.  If I spend too much time out of the state, if my parents were to pay my tuition, if I took out any parent loans, if anyone was to give me money to support me, got claimed on my parents' taxes... I wouldn't qualify.  I had to show them that I was registered to vote, I had the driver's license, show them my tax records... show them proof of rent, bill payments, general expenses done under my name... But I'm happy to say that I am now considered a resident for tuition purposes! :)

The community college that I took classes at for one summer though just needed me to show that I had been living there for one year, and that's all it took.  So I hope your process is as simple as that one :)

Well, now you've made me nervous!     That's good though.  I should find out more.

Sorry!  I don't want to make you nervous, but it's good to know.

If your parents are living in Wisconsin, you shouldnt' have problems.  But the will NOT give you resident tuition if they think you're only staying there for school.  If they have any reason to think you'll leave once you finish school, they won't give you resident tuition, even if you were living there for over a year.

http://www4.uwm.edu/future_students/residency_tuition_purposes.cfm#determing

If that's the school you're looking in to, it seems like their policy is kind of like the one I went to.  My issue was the fact that my parents don't live in the same state... so I had to show that I support myself.  You should probably call your school and make sure they know your particular case...  It does mention in there that you can take off the year to establish some form of residency... but you may want to call to make sure what you will need to qualify.

It's simple enough to show you've lived there, but if you didn't graduate from a Wisconsin highschool and your parents aren't there, the process may be a little harder than what they seemed to make you think.

Hopefully it'll work out for you though.  I ended up paying on year of non-resident tuition fees, but it's great to be back in school :).
