I was watching Animal Cops Detroit with my grandma today and there was a sweet dog who was going to be put down. Why? Because he was dangerously food aggressive.

Her reaction? "Okay, so he's sweet but you're still going to kill him."

I asked "Would you appreciate feeding one or your dogs and they bite your hand?"

""

You can't save all of them, and I know I wouldn't have adopted him. Why people get so worked up I have no clue.

I don't think a dog should be put down for being food aggressive. Then again, I had an attack German Shepard. Bit so many people and dogs but he loved his family more than anything. Probably was the best dog I have ever had..I was only seven when I had him too.

Unfortunately, a lot of people can't afford to hire such a trainer. It can be an expensive proposition. Not to mention time-consuming.

The Humane Society would have to pay for it, and we all know they can't afford to do that. The best option is to put it down unless someone is willing to fund it.

He was a mix. Might have had some yellow lab in him. He wasn't an aggressive breed.

That's a huge liability and irresponsible of the owner to keep such a dog. My Shepard is a guard dog, but he's friendly with people and other dogs outside the home.

Agreed.

Also, there are ways around it. If its placed in the RIGHT home (NO kids, NO other dogs/pets), its 100% manageable, especially if that's their only aggressive tendency.

Put the dog on one side of a room or a door, put said food in a bowl, put the bowl down, make sure you're AWAY from the food, and let him/her go eat.

Point being, there are ways to feed a food-aggressive dog safely.

One of our dogs is actually a little food aggressive. Not too bad in her case, its mostly with other dogs, but we just know that the food has to be down, and our hands have to be away before she can eat.

And as wakinglife said, with proper training it can be fixable.

The people he bit were people that continually harassed him. He never bit anyone outside the house and he didnt get along with other dogs. He NEVER turned on his family. Ever. He was so loyal.

Dogs who are perfectly adoptable sit in shelters for ages. It wouldn't have a chance.

Besides, the dog is aggressive. That can transfer over to lets say if it got something out of the trash. A chicken bone that it could choke on. You have to remove it from its mouth but you can't? The dog would be dangerous and unpredictable, period.
