Imitation of Life, about a girl who had a black mother and she was so light she passed for white and she denied her mother for being black it is such a sad movie but i couldnt help but feel bad for the girl I mean all she wanted was to lead a normal life and not be black and since she didn't look black why was it imporant for her to say "I'm black" why is it important I mean if you pass for something else that you want to be why would you feel the need to correct people

I believe the problem is that the denomination of "black" during the 1960s was such a negative connotation that some were willing to go to any lengths to deny attachment to it.

This is truly a pity and says more about the state of race relations and the distorted self-image of blacks during the 1960s than it does about the word "black" itself.

The fact that the OP feels kinship with such sentiments tells us that among some of us the stigma of being black has still not been eradicated. This is the true tragedy.
