I freelanced an article to this magazine and they published it. I then applied to be a regular writer. The editor-in-chief wrote back to me saying that he really liked the piece I wrote for them, but can't see me working as a regular writer. He said it's cause he doesn't think my style and the magazine's style "gel together yet."

He then said that he would "definitely encourage" me to keep freelancing for them though.

I'm disappointed. Do you think he thought my writing sucked?

He meant exactly what he told you.  He likes your writing enough for you to be featured occasionally, but not in every issue.  Freelancing is tough.
