Is E = MC^2 the equation to split an atom? I didn't think so, but when watching something on Science Channel, they said that Einstein unlocked the key to the Nuclear Warhead with his famous equation E = MC^2... and it really confused me... anyone know what it is? and if that's not what it means, what is the written out formula, and what does it truly mean?

E=MC^2 describes the relationship between matter and energy. matter is basically a different facet of the same concept. E is energy. M is mass and C is the speed of light (a big fucking number in meters per second), with the C being squared. it means that if you split an atom, you're going to get an intense amount of energy. its not so much that you need an equation to split an atom, just that you need an equation to understand the amount of energy that comes from such an act.

do you understand NOW? because noone else is posting, and it seems you got it due to your not asking any more questions.

Lol, yeah, I got it. Thanks lots. I was right in what the equation meant (energy equals mass times light [speed of] squared), just was confused on what it was used for. Thanks.

no problem. its just that television documentaries give all the right information, they don't give it in a right manner though.

E = units of energy m = units of mass c^2 = speed of light squared
Essentially, its representing how small of an amount of mass is needed to create a nuclear reaction.

we got this now. thanks anyway.
You told him it was to split an atom.
While that's true, you didn't explain the "practical use", to create a nuclear reaction, i.e. nuclear bomb.
Not to say you're incorrect, I was just making a point.

I didnt say the equation was explicity to split an atom, I said that the equation was for the demonstration of how much energy you get from such an act.

It's not the equation that splits, or does, anything. It's the consequences of the real-life meaning of the equation.
