...but I got my copy of Halflife 2 up and working. I'd never played it before, never played Halflife either and purely got this because of the hype about it and how it is allegedly one of the best games ever made.

I've played it quite a bit and I hate it, its like playing a scary film. Its uninteresting and the aliens are like zombies walking around with things attached to their heads.

I'm on my own all the time, I haven't got a team or even a buddy with me.

The aim on the weapons is shit. I can't line up the sights like on other FPSs.

Overall, and even in 2004 I'd have felt the same way for the above reasons, I think its a very poor game.

Could someone please point out the merits of it?

yes, that is something really cool: the physics engine. The other thing I like is the solving problems.

But it is so boring to play.

If you don't like HL-series you have piss poor taste in games.

I feel the same way when I play Halo games.  Some overhyped generic fps with little to no technical merit.

well i guess i dont have any gaming taste. but i agree with you on halo being crap.  what turned me off of HL was like the OP said you cant shoulder the gun im sorry but i prefer to look down the sights not fire from the hip and the story didnt grab me at all

And you seem as ignorant as most console gamers.  Mods are 3rd party addons, not cheats.  Some parts of the game are harder using SMOD vs playing standard, not a very good cheat.

i always lol when this happens, mods on consoles are like changing the controller/lag switches. They don't realise what mods are on pc, and automatically assume it's cheating.

sorry i dont use cheats thats why i play on console

Mods =/= cheats. You'd know that if you'd ever used them in any game at all. Hell, I can't even imagine why people buy games like Oblivion on console, when the mods are what made that game good.
