So basically to qualify for a lower tuition, they have to classify me as a resident of this state. Great, easy enough, I've been living here over two years. Well, because my parents don't live here, I also have to prove that I'm self-sufficient. This means, no financial assistance, from ANYONE. So, I had to submit my Income and Expenses in 6 months intervals. The first two periods I took a year off from college to work. The second two periods, I had started school. They wrote in my letter that my expenses exceeded my income in some areas. Well duh... yeah, maybe in the last year I spent more than I made... but did you forget from the year before that I had over 10,000 dollars in savings? Is it so hard to make that connection? Grr... I better win in my appeal.

Haha, I am! It's just a pain. I pulled up all my bank records for the past two years, have four different letters from employers, and am working on typing up the relevant explanations. I really can't afford for this not to work :'(
People are so stupid. My friend had to go through this massive process to get support for college. She has cerebral palsy and they keep wanting proof that it won't go away. Yeah, she's faking it. She can actually get out of that wheelchair and run away when you aren't looking.
Yeah... I mean, in my case it's a bit more understandable, but they make it so difficult. What's even more great is that they expect a full-time college student, who's only 19, to be able to afford 30,000 dollars tuition, pay rent, books, bills, everything... on their own. Of course, financial aid covers a great deal of that tuition... but I'm still left with about 11,000 out of pocket. The irritating thing? If they give me this residency? It drops by a fucking 20,000 dollars for the year.

Ugh. How lame! Do you have student loan schemes over there? Or is that the financial aid? I'm so in debt already and haven't even finished my first year. I'm going to spend the rest of my life paying the government back.

I go to a public college. If they don't consider you a resident of that state, then they charge you an extra amount JUST because you aren't a member of the state (since state taxes pay for the school and the like). So just because my parents live somewhere else (which I can't change), they say... we'll make you pay over 10,000 dollars more per semester. It's just frustrating... my parents are willing to help me, but it's not like they have the money. They can't even take out LOANS for me either. Funnier still... I send my dad money -__-', not the other way around. It just makes me so sad... I already took a year off between highschool and college. And now with the economy? They increased tuition, said they are going to lower my financial aid, and there's a chance I may get 3 dollars an hour less because of the economy -__-'. I guess more than anything... I work hard to get myself through school. It's just another stress that I wish I didn't have to worry about :(

So wait... if you are a resident of a state, they'll pay for your fees? It's not like a loan where you have to pay it back? If so, that's pretty handy. That really sucks though. :( Damn recession.

Not quite. Basically, as a public school, they get funding from the state, right? Who pays the state... the tax payers. If I'm not a resident, or if they think there's a chance I'll go live with my parents again (ie, not being self-sufficient) after school, they wont' give me resident tuition. Basically, they think I'm going to get my degree and move. Most students at that school pay only about 10,000 (if they don't live in the dorm). For me, even though I've been living here for over two years, my tuition is just 20,000 dollars more than theres. That's it... just because my parents live somewhere else from me, it's difficult to prove that I DO live here. So it's not that they pay that 20,000 for you, it's that they make ME pay an extra 20,000 for them. 30,000 is enough already, it would be almost 45,000 if I chose to live in a dorm. That's why I live where I do and I commute so far to get to school -__-'. It makes sense... tax payers pay a lot, and if you live here, you pay taxes. But I'VE also paid taxes here...

Ooh gosh, that's annoying. I get it now. It's a bugger they make you pay so much extra. Ridiculous really. I hope you're able to prove to them you do live in the state, money-hungry suckers! What are you studying, by the way?
Chemical Engineering with a concentration in biotechnology. Though I'm planning on getting a phD, and I'm not sure in what. I may stick with chem eng, or I might do biomedical engineering. I just trying to tell myself that even if I do have to take out loans, I'll make enough money to pay them off after school! Hopefully it's not false hope :P
Sounds hard, but interesting! A PhD, wow that's ambitious.

Lol, I love school. That's why it's worth fighting for, haha. I definitely want my phD though... for my own reasons, and I think that it would make my dad a very happy person as well. But more than anything it's for me... Maybe it's to prove something to myself, who knows. But I'm determined to at least get that far. Who knows, maybe I'll go for a post doc if I can...

Nice. :D Always good to make the folks happy. I just want to get my degree and go from there. I'm enjoying it more than I thought I would though! I didn't find school fun but university is.
