OK I haven't had a good amount of sleep in 2 or 3 days now and it's driving me crazy.

I went to bed around 11pm last night and I did feel tired after a long day full of walking around the shopping mall and stuff. I tried listening to my ipod on lower volume than usual, but that seemed to do little help to me. I tried daydreaming nice, peaceful thoughts as much as I could but that didn't work either. I was awake until around 4am and I woke up at 9:30am.

I think this may be because I'm feeling overwhelmed and lonely. I was away all summer at camp and I miss it there. Also, I'm starting my new school in less than 2 weeks now and I'm very excited but also nervous. I know it will be a great experience, but I'm still scared. I've switched schools more than enough times in my lifetime and I don't like it much. All these thoughts about my new school are stuck in my head all the time.

What should I do? Is this normal? I don't really feel tired and my sleep cycle is now screwed up.

You might not feel tired yet with all this lack of sleep but you will soon feel it coming. Even before reading your post, just by the title the first thing i though was...it must be stress. Nerves and stress is one of the main reasons which is making it hard to fall asleep.

I used to find it hard to fall asleep with music, until. i changed it.Try and get something more of a melody rather then words, nothing to think about but just listening.

The one thing i could suggest is for you to relax yourself over the day to not be overwhelmed during the nights. Also before my exams this June to relieve stress i took these stress relief tablets, nothing special or strong. Nothing too addictive too, but they have no effect if you have them too often. Maybe get some relaxants like that just to get your sleeping pattern back.

Sometimes things bother us that we cant even realise, a friends problem and something else too.

For the last year or so I've been quite a heavy sleeper (wanting to sleep for 12+ hours a night) but I remember the night before going on holiday, I couldn't sleep till about 2am then woke up at 6am.  It was so unusual for me, but it was because I was excited, nervous, anxious, all those feelings.  It's only normal for a person to lose sleep when something rather big is happening in their lives, like starting a new school.  And you did state you were excited/nervous, so that could explain a lot.  Missing camp could be indicative of some type of sadness, which can also contribute to sleeping patterns being disrupted.

I take it you have trouble getting to sleep and staying asleep, correct?  That shows signs of insomnia, but I doubt you have a serious condition.  My suggestions for you are to go for a run or do some type of exercise before bed.  This tires out the body and when you hit the bed your body is more inclined to relax.  Also, try having a hot shower before bed, followed by a warm glass of milk or chamomile tea.  You could also try putting a few drops of lavender on the underside of your pillow (I've heard this helps).

Listening to music helps some, but for some others it wakes them up.  It gets their brain working and makes the body/mind alert.  I think probably avoid listening to music for a while and see if that changes things.  Reading a book before bed can also make your eyes heavy and tired.  I'll add my two cents about sleeping pills, because sometimes they really do help.  They basically relax the body and allow it to fall asleep, which could benefit you greatly.  You could buy some herbal, over the counter sleeping aides, which are fairly cheap, but if you wanted something stronger you can head down to your doctor and talk to him.  He can suggest some other possibilities too.

At the end of the day I think it comes down to stress, and being able to turn your mind/body off.  Wear it out before bed and I hope it helps a bit.  Good luckkkkk.
