That only applies to Windows XP and down. I believe that Vista is capable of, and I know Windows 7 is capable of doing Windows up dates with out IE installed or necessary.

I know W7 won't need it, but it's not officially released yet so the portion of people who have it is quite small. But I'm still on XP and have not had Vista myself.
