This is only from The University of Florida, but still very interesting.
When a student applies to UF, we completely recalculate their high school GPA only using grades 9 thru 11 and only using the 5 core academic classes -- English, Math, Science, Social Science and Foreign Language. We do NOT consider electives to be academic classes and they are not used in the GPA recalculations. For honors classes with a grade of "C" or better, we give 1/2 point added weight, i.e., an "A" in Honors English is calculated as a 4.5. For AP classes with a grade of "C" or better, we give 1.0 added weight, i.e., your "A" in AP Psychology would be calculated as a 5.0.
Senior year grades don't count, but the strength of your senior year schedule counts a great deal -- we look to see that you are taking the most academically challenging classes available to you -- we actually look for the AP classes your senior year.
>>>>I am a bit confused. If I failed a non-academic class, if would not hurt my recalculated gpa?
>>>>>Non-academic classes in high school are NOT considered nor used in the recalculated high school GPA.

No malevolence about you, yeah that might not be true.
You were my worst love, you'll be the first to go.
