They say the way to get high up on a search engine is to ensure your site has lots of links, but what if the site is a professional site and there just arent that many different links you can make? Are you screwed? Did i misunderstand something here or do you need lots of links to help get your site high on google results?

You just need to go advertise all over the place.

Number of links doesn't matter at all.   Think about it.. if I had 1 link from Google's home page to my site, would that be better than having 10000000 links from sites who show up on page 20 in keyword results?

Use your head :)

To get high up on search engines you need to have websites linking to your website. Some tips that will help you:

1. Content
The more content you have on your website (text, labeled images, ect) the more views your website will get. This can be hard for a professional website. Make sure you include a site map so that bots and crawlers can easily navigate through your web page and find all of the pages.

2. Meta Tags
Add meta tags to your website, This will also increase your websites ranking but make sure your keywords match your content! Websites like google can check this so make sure you don't just add random key words in order to get more views. If you add false keywords some search engines can remove you from being listed or decrease your rank.

3. Backlinks
Backlinks are other websites that link to your website, These can increase your ranking significantly. To get these you can either pay for advertising or you can try and find someone that will advertise you if you advertise them (this is called reciprocal linking; there are a lot of websites that will do this with you for free).

4. Domain Age:
Domain Age can play a role in how your website is ranked in search engines, The older it is the better your rank will be!

Things to avoid:
* Do not add keywords that do not match your content or aren't relevant to your website; Google and other search engines can detect this and may decrease your rank for it.

* Do not add 'invisible content' or spam 'invisible text' to make your website have more content. By invisible text and invisible content I mean having white text on a white page or using CSS to make the text appear off of the screen. Google and other search engines can detect this and may decrease your websites rank if you are caught.
