Running Windows natively on Mac

I put VMWare and Windows XP on my Macbook Pro this morning but it's not working properly. Someone told me to take VMWare off and to just run Windows natively but I'm not sure what to do. Should I just uninstall VMWare? Or do I have to uninstall both VMWare and Windows? And if I uninstall both, will I be able to choose to add more space to Windows? I could only partition off 40GB using VMWare but my boyfriend uses Boot Camp and I think he said that he put more on and I wouldn't mind having a bit more than 40GB.

I use virtual box, easier than VMWare in my honest opinion...

you can also make it dynamic, so as the partition needs to grow, it grows.

Yeah, that comes with your computer but apparently that requires rebooting when going from OS X to the Windows virtual machine and I was trying to avoid that but if VMWare is causing this problem, I'd do it anyways.

You shouldn't need to partition the actual disk itself for VMware. I've got a Windows XP install on my VMware fusion set up and it works rather nicely, fairly responsive too. What was your actual problem?

As for installing and running Windows natively, you can use BootCamp to do that, it should be in the utilities folder under BootCamp assistant or on the original OS X install disk. BootCamp is more effort in the sense that you do have to partition the hard drive itself to allow it to run, and that cannot be changed once you install windows, so you can't just give it more space as you desire. It also means you have to shut down OS X and start up in Windows if you want to use it, unlike VMware or Parallels where they can both run at the same time.

Well, one of the few things I plan on doing with Windows is gaming. I tried putting Perfect World International on and running it but it was really glitchy and laggy. It downloaded and installed okay but when I actually tried to start the game, the window kept flickering wildly before basically crashing altogether. I tried again and it did the same thing but eventually stopped and let me sign in. As soon as I got in, it was so laggy that I quit after less than five minutes and shut both the game and Windows down. My boyfriend uses Boot Camp and he said that the game was laggy for him as well but I'm not sure what he considers "laggy", he's anti-f2p anyways. XD

Although, I think he ran a few other games on Windows and didn't have a problem so I can't tell what exactly is the issue.

Oh yeah, well of course gaming on a virtualised system is no-no. One cannot expect good performance when access to hardware devices isn't directly possible.

For that you will have to use BootCamp, and depending on the specs of your system it shouldn't be too bad. I've seen a video on youtube of crysis being run on a MBP. It's not amazing but it had fairly decent performance. Really in BootCamp it will be just the same as a Windows laptop of similar specs.

So what do I need to do? Can I just remove VMWare or should i start all over and get rid of Windows and VMWare both? Would getting rid of Windows be similar to removing a regular program?

I can't remember how VMware installs, if it's with a package or just on its own. In any case though, you should just be able to trash the app directly and make sure to remove the VMware image file (where it stores the data) to rid it from your system.

I dunno, I put in a CD and it walked me through the setup asking me if I wanted to have stuff mirrored or whatever and then there was an option for adding a virtual machine so I clicked it and put my copy of Windows in and it walked me through the setup.

So I can just uninstall VMWare? What will that do to Windows? At the moment, it's only 40GB.

Sorry, this is the first Mac I've ever owned and I'm learning along the way. XD

Well VMware stores the image files separately - that's where Windows and the data is kept, so if you remove VMware alone it would do nothing to Windows. The image files itself should be in the directory ~/Documents/Virtual Machines/ unless you changed the parameters during initial setup.

Unless you want to transfer stuff over (in which case start up the machine and copy whatever you need) you can go ahead and just remove the image file, because you'll have to make a completely fresh one to get Windows running in BootCamp.
