My Mac gets really hot whenever I use Skype and the video gets slow and skippy, and the audio cuts in and out.

Any ideas why?

Your Mac isn't capable of handling high framerates, and so your VGA card (or onboard card) is overheating, trying to keep up with what your asking it to do.
so in the end, all I can say is....yeah buy a pc...

Your graphics card (more likely than not, integrated) probably can't handle it.  If you have one of the Mac Pros (probably not, pricey and uncool, looks similar to regular PC) you can upgrade the video card.  But if you have a laptop/notebook or iMac/Mac Mini you are out of luck.

Mac Pro or MacBook Pro?

If you have a Mac Pro you just have to pick a card that is compatible (as in there are OS X drivers for it).

This is the best list I can find of compatible cards without searching very hard.

It probably isn't overloading your graphics then.  If I remember right most modern MacBook Pro have a dedicated card/chip.  The integrated video on my netbook can handle video chat.

Probably is some kind of program bug.  Not much you can do besides reinstalling the program and possible drivers (not sure how or if possible on a Mac).

I found out that it's the fact that I'm keeping it on my sheets on my bed that makes it heat up so much.

I'm a dumbass.

That'll do it.  When I leave my laptop on my bed I put a notebook (paper kind) or textbook under it.

There was also that one time I had an old shitty one (think 1999 era) playing music in the car.  I had it directly on the seat.  About 2 hours later (long drive) I smelt a faint burning smell.  Nearly burned my hand shutting the computer down.  Lucky I didn't fry anything or get a overheat blue screen.
