What happens to someone with physical disabilities who commits a crime and needs to serve prison time?

I would certainly hope they wouldn't put a paraplegic man in prison with extremely dangerous and perfectly able bodied convicts...

Do they have special facilities for those with physical disabilities or something?

If they're in a prison with very dangerous people, then they're obviously pretty dangerous themselves. There shouldn't be any special units for physically disabled inmates. If they're able enough to commit a crime then they're able enough to serve time in whatever prison they're sent to.

For the same reason that make and female inmates are generally segregated from each other, and the same reason that juvenile inmates are generally segregated from adult inmates.

A prison sentence is just that, a prison sentence.  Not a death sentence.

Well put gro. There are countless non-dangerous offenders in prison with dangerous ones. If a one armed man commits identity theft and is in with rapists (which he will be in the general poulation) he has no chance. He will be constantly raped or killed.  <p> Sunshine is an ignorant asshole. Life is NOT the same for the disabled nor should be prison.  <p> But it seems in my research that where they go in prison (general pop vs special wing/facility) varies greatly by state.

Ignorant? Being severely physically disabled myself I highly doubt that to be the case.

I fully understand that life is different for disabled people. But if you're going to commit a crime you shouldn't be given special treatment,

A prison sentence is a sentence of a confinement. It's not a sentence of anything else.  If it can be reasonably expected that someone placed in the general prison population is substantially more likely to be assaulted/raped/murdered/whatever else, then segregating them is not special treatment, it's just trying to make sure that what is a ten year sentence for one person is not a death sentence for someone else.

Actually if an inmate can prove that he is the target of sexual violence then he can get transferred out of the general population I think.
