This is a pretty long story, but I'm hoping to get some encouragement. I've always been in AP and Honors classes. By the end of my senior year I will have 6 (possibly 7) APs, and 6 Honors (mostly in Spanish or the Sciences).
Last year, I got the worse Pre-Calculus teacher ever. She was gone for half the year, and when she got back, expected us to know the material. About 5 people in my class dropped out during the year. The rest of the people cheated. I did not do either, and ended up with a C in the class.
At my school, math and physics are related. So, I got a C in Physics too, in part because I didn't understand the math, and also because my parents couldn't afford to get a tutor (mom got laid off).
So, I went from having a varying 3.9-4.2 GPA, to having a 3.3 last year. With two big fat C's on my record.
If things had gone my way, I would have been putting the finishing touches on my academic record.
Because of the math problems last year, I could not advance to Calculus this year. I mean, I COULD have, but I would have failed because the same teacher teaches it, and I don't have the pre-existing knowledge from Pre-Cal.
I do technically have 4 years of math though, since I was in accelerated math in middle school, so I took Honors Algebra 1 then, and it is on my record.
I'm applying to places like UCLA, which are pretty selective, and I feel like they're going to look at my application, see the C's and the fact that I am not in Calculus, go "Wow, she's lazy", and throw it out.
I'm fucked. :[
