I went to an art Gallery today, called "Weisman Center" that is attached to the University of Minnesota and saw the coolest art exhibit.

R. Luke Dubois did a series entitled hindsight has 20/20 vision" where he took all of the presidents state of the union adresses. He entered them all into a database by president (there are apparently 1 or 2 who died before even giving one)  and then ran them through a word counting program. The first thing he did was remove all the articles, conjunctions, pronouns etc. Then he removed any words that were common to every single adress.

Then he found the top 67 words in each presidents total database (for example, FDR had a ton of speeches to draw words from, since he was president for so long) and placed them on a vision chart (like the one you look at when you go to the optometrist) with the most used word biggest and then ranked down the line.

Here are a few examples

Abraham Lincoln

Richard Nixon

William Jefferson Clinton

and the most telling of all
George W. Bush

Enjoy!

meh. it's a neat idea, but obviously each president is going to use words that are relevant to the time, issues, and concerns of the country.

Things were a hell of a lot different when abe lincoln was president than they are now.

Hehe, George Bush and his terrorism paranoia. I'm surprised the first phrase on his list wasn't "weapons of mass destruction"; he used that a mighty lot while convincing others that it was okay to invade Iraq.
