Try novatechs site, they have some good deals on laptops. And E-system laptops are pretty good too. Try to get a friend or family member to look at laptops with you, someone that knows good specs and the technical side.

Every post you get here is going to be biased. HP is only good if you get a lemon and then they can't find it at the repair center and then they offer to replace it free. And then you yell at them to give you the specs you want. Those are the best laptops! I've had no issues with the FREE replacement one... except when I play a game the area above my hard drive gets very very hot. So of course I will say HP. Sony annoys me with their little start up sound, but you can disable that some how. Which I was considering a Vaio I almost had the card out to pay for it when HP called and was like yeah we can't find it so we will replace it. Then two weeks later both the replacement and my original arrive on my door step. HA! Really all the laptops are the same, just with a brand stuck to them. So you should consider... HP, Dell, Toshiba, Sony, but I would avoid Gateway. Post edited at 7:11 am on Sep. 6, 2008 by BBallAsh23

Acer usually has cheeper models, along with Compaq and eMachines. However I would stay away from eMachines since Gateway owns them. Gateway computers typically have more problems with them when compared to other brands. Depending on what you are going to do on it, if you are a gamer, then I would suggest an Intel Core2 Duo as a processer. AMD's equivelint isn't "up to par" when compared to Intel's. Aggreing with BBallash23, I would suggest 2GB of RAM, mainly because Vista will need it and depending on what applications you will run. If you are doing just internet and e-mail then 2GB of RAM will be fine, and either brand of processer will work, since you aren't doing anything that "intensive". This model right now is really cheep and is a good deal. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8933005&type=product&id=1215216329460 There are little quirks about every brand, however basically what's inside of them like the processer, graphics card, etc. is what's going to make it good or not. One problem with Gateway is that they usually will out-source (or get from other countries) almost all of there parts, so most times they don't work as well, because they will get a cheeper model too. Hope this helps, -Daniel
