So I live in a dorm like house where we get wifi from it. Does it like pop up on the computer guy's(in my house whose in charge of wifi) when I get a song off limewire? Or is it just like in my computer's history or something and doesn't come to his attention?

I don't think it would be something he'd find out, unless he raided your PC. Be considerate though. If you get a virus, it could get through the whole system through the Wifi.

I've heard that they can tell/check if you're downloading things illegally, but I don't know how.

Don't use limewire, though, learn to torrent.

Not quite. But he should be able to access the logs of the wireless router to see where you've been browsing as well as what programs are using the signal. My old wireless router allowed me to do that.

Unless he is a networking major most likely not.  Just have to follow the protocols through something like Wireshark.  But there would be no proof of what is being downloaded (Limewire and like programs are legal, only what some people share is illegal.  One can get many freeware programs through it if one wanted to.)

Just be smart about it and if the owner does not want it to happen don't do it.  Or if you do it and get officially caught (if doing so illegally) just fess up that it was you.

Unless he is monitoring traffic and reading packets he will have no idea what you are downloading.  If you want to be extra safe just use torrents with Utorrent and run it encrypted.

If the guy has an above average knowledge of networking, he can reconstruct the packets sent over the WiFi into data that he can examine, he can also if absolutely necessary tell exactly what you have been using the connection for and what data has been passed through the connection.

However, when you download something  or surf the net, it will not just pop up on his computer what you are doing. He will only know what you have been doing if he decides to read the logs and make an effort to find that information out.

Unless you're killing the connection with obscene levels of downloading or if this guy has nothing better to do, I wouldn't worry.

This would be the best option.

They almost never have any way to tell WHAT your downloading, but there are familier traffic patterns to using programs like limewire and even torrents, because of the massive ammounts of in/outgoing connections each program makes. My work caught on to a guy only when he did this in excess because he had 'accidently' left his program on, and within the course of 4 hours his computer made 800,000 in/out going connections, which made up something like %70 of the entire network traffic inside the building. (Company of ~300 people.) There was no way to tell what exactly he was doing other than that computer had made so many connections and transferred a shitton of data.
