Anyone wanna help with my english?
it's an essay question about the book 1984 (but really it doesnt have anything to do with the book);

the question is:

Only 15% of the population are members of the official Party, yet the Party rules with little or no opposition. How is this similar to politics in America today?

The only idea I have is that this is similar to politics in America today because goverment officials only make up a very small percent of hte population, but they keep everyone in line.

Pleasee help??

I will love you forever & ever & everrrr =]

It's talking about voting.

If you have 15% of the people voting for party A, 10% voting for party B, and then remaining 75% not voting, who wins?

I believe it is referring to the apathy of voters.*

*Or possibly the fact that in the current election, a somewhat substantial group of people are saying that they hate both of the main candidates and will abstain.

Read the book years ago... I don't remember much, but there was something about a lady that sang a folk song or something? She represented the proletariat and their mindset. Compare her to the average American.

I haven't read the book, but I highly doubt it deals with the apathy of voters. Having read "Brave New World" I can understand how a very small percentage of the population can control society, in a futuristic setting.

You example seems legit.

The only other thing I could think of is that politicians are comprised of mainly the well-born. Perhaps, the top 15% of the wealthiest Americans? In that way, you only have a very small percentage of America's population (only the wealthiest) controlling the rest of the population.

Are you fucking joking me? 15% of the population is HUGE!

In America, that would be approximately 45 million people. Do you really think that 45 million people are in our government? Even using your wealth idea, that's enormous.

I think it's more similar to political party affiliations. You don't need 95% of the vote to win office, just more than any other party. You don't even need 51%.

Lets suppose that only 70% of the eligible population is registered to vote. In any given election in the US, not all of these people vote, maybe like 25% of that. That's around 15% of the total populace. even voting. Split that in to several parties and you've got a low percentage of people voting for the ruling party.

Out of the top 15%, there is only a small percentage of people that actually run for any sort of office...

Really, it doesn't compare with American politics at all, and any comparison is a stretch at best.

Beacause of the nature of the American electoral system it means that the party in charge may not be the party that gained the majority of the votes in the country. Say 25% of people voted for the green party and 30% of people voted for the Democrats that means only 45% of people voted for the Republicans which means over half of the country do not want them to rule but they still do. Geddit?

omgzz!! it has NOTHING TO DO WITH VOTING!! okay. GAH! =/

It's just too bad that it absolutely does. Or, on a broader scale, only 15% of the populace ACTUALLY  follows and is aware of the goings on of political hoohaw.
