The Wow Syndrome is a phenomenon where an individual or groups of individuals exhibit an interpretative bias upon hearing a singular axis of high-achievement, where an inference is made in regards to other axis of competence. Often, this is accompanied by uttering "Wow." Primary Symptoms:
- Following the disclosure of a particular competency (in a quantifiable system eg test scores), the client exhibits interpretative bias where the client assumes competencies in areas that have not been disclosed (aka http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halo_effect"" target="_top">Halo Effect)
- Uttering "Wow"
- Succession of questions regarding the single disclosed axis of competency
Secondary Symptoms:
- Widening of eyes
- Repetition of "wow"
- Broadened scope of questioning to include other axes of competencies
- Denial of evidence against assumed competencies (aka [url="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Self-fulfilling_prophecy"Self Fulfilling Prophecy[/url]
- Hurried succession of questions to vito any opposing evidence
Incidence & Prevalence:
- As with most cases of morbidity, low socio-economic status (SES) is correlated with high incidence.
- Prevalence is unclear
