Me I'm not so sure.

I think there are many cons such as the pain and humiliation at the hands of other people who just don't get it.  Having a disability myself I'd had people say things about me to others that weren't even true. Lots of them don't take the time to know me and in the place where I live your reputation is everything. People listen to rumors and things like that then base their opinion of you on that. Its sad but its true.


Other times people are nice to your face, but not behind your back. I've had many people that I thought were my friends, but then they say things about me that were mean. Often times they go tell my sister asking her questions like "Why's your sister so retarded?" but they never try to have a conversation with me.


Other times I'm convinced that they just want to use me. For example, my classes are so far I'm allowed a pass in case I get there late. At my school if you are late to class then you go to tardy hall. Sometimes kids will lie to the teachers and say that they were helping me when they wasn't so that she doesn't send them to tardy hall.

I think the worse part is if my kid with DS thought "What would I be able to accomplish in life if I didn't have DS" I do think about my disability like this a lot.

Keep it.

My cousin has Down's Syndrome.  She is very well cared for and loved, and she's very happy, always smiling.  She graduated high school (not a special high school, either...she was in public school) and has a job.  It's a great success story.

It's hard raising a child with Down's Syndrome, but the raising just shows more love if we're willing to put more into it than we would have to for a normal child.  It wouldn't change my love for that child if he/she had a disability, either.
