and i use my desktop and my sister uses the laptop. anyways when the router is connected i cant send IMs through AIM. i have to disconnect the router and directly connect the modem. has this ever happend to anyone else and what can i do?

Sounds like the ports are blocked.  On the router interface, look for port forwarding.  Forward ports 5190 - 5193 to your local ip address.  You might be able to find a list of connected devices on the router interface.  That'll list your IP.

Try turning on Network Address Translation too (NAT).
