I was taught, in public school that the big bang theory was the beginning of the universe.  Perhaps we are being taught differently here than you are.

It was, but the big bang itself didn't directly create everything.

I've read the link, thanks. I'm not a very scientific person so I'm not that interested in the various meanings of the word "theory" in whatever number of contexts.

My belief is both should be taught in schools. Both evolution and creationism.

No offence, but your belief is based in ignorance. Just two contexts, and two meanings. In common usage, theory means something untested. In science we call this a hypothesis (provided it can be tested).

If we find a fact in science - like the fact that genetic traits change from generation to generation, or that stuff falls down - we come up with an explanation of this fact.

This explanation must be testable and able to predict future events. We call this a theory.

To explain stuff falling down we have the theory of gravity (or more correctly the general theory of relativity).

To explain the fact that genetic traits change in populations, we have the theory of evolution. It's not untested, it's not a tentative idea, it's an explanation of hard fact.

BUT, if evolution is going to be taught as science in the Christian schools, creation should be taught in the public schools.  Both are nothing more than theories.  You cannot say one is over the other without bringing a personal opinion into it.  Public schools don't have religion lessons.  Why should evolution be taught to everyone when creation is only taught to a select few.  Should the students not have the right to decide what to believe AFTER being given both sides of the argument?

On the same token, public schools shouldn't be able to get away with just not teaching creation.

Firstly, schools over here do have Religious Education classes.

Secondly, please define "scientific theory". If you get it right you get 50 points.

yeah i will give you points too if you can coz as i love my physics i will fight that there is no god at all in this universe and there are other beings in it too there has to be its too big for there not to be but over here we do teach about creation in R.E> and did you know that in some schools run by churchs they dont even have any books about it in there libery and if the childern are found reading up on it they are punished

Why shouldn't creationism be taught, then, SpM?

I'm fine with creationism being explained in R.E. (I prefer not to use the word "taught" as it implies an assertion of truth.) Other creation stories should also be covered, of course.

Evolution should be taught like the proven truth that it is.

I went to a Catholic school and when they taught it to us the teacher had a priest come in and talk to us first. I think the whole thing is ridiculous. Do they teach Creationism instead? That's like teaching the stork theory instead of biological reproduction.

But what about those people who believe creationism to be truth, surely that means it's unfair towards them? (I'm just making an argument here)

They're just plain wrong. Schools should teach the truth indiscriminately.

If someone didn't believe in sums, we wouldn't consider letting them skip maths class.

Don't mean to be rude, but could you re-write that please? I can't make out what you're trying to say.

But some people genuinely believe evolution to be completely wrong.

Exactly. Creationism is only considered superior to storks because it is socially acceptable.

In 100 years people will look back and wonder what we were thinking.

Ok so basically every thing should be tought at school as is every religous view so that childern can make there own minds up and also evolution shcould be tought too coz non of them have been proven to be true.

But some people genuinely believe evolution to be completely wrong.

And they're wrong.

The wonderful thing about science is that it is not subject to opinion. It doesn't care if it hurts people's feelings. It is simply information, and science classes exist to dispense this information to the masses.
