French was compulsory for me. from grade 1 to 9, then I chose to take the course again in grade 10, but I dropped it in 11.

No, because I know English.

Why would I bother with anything else?

To communicate with other cultures outside your own or other english speaking cultures and not to expect them to speak english?

And yes I took Spanish and French at GCSE, Spanish at A level and hope to do Spanish and (only if I go to lancaster uni) possibly italian too at Uni :)
