I'm not a Christian, but I can't stand it when people bash them to no end. You want them to keep to themselves, then leave them the hell alone.

Nowhere in the Bible does it say that Adam & Eve were brother-sister. Okay, Eve was created from Adam's rib. Big deal. In the religious realm, anything is possible, and even looking outside of it... like I said, there's nothing saying that they were related in any way.

you don't get it. it was their children that had to have sex with each other. because, remember, they are the only ones in the world. there is no one else in the world. so their children had to commit incest in order to procreate.

when did they ever commit incest?
and i am getting tired of people making fun of the Christian religion

And I'm tired of christians passing laws based on their own delusional beliefs in a 2,000 year-old fairytale that apply to the general population.

But I don't think either one of us is getting our way any time soon.

I'm posting this yet again, because no one of the local Christian population answered:
How do you explain the fact that in order for the children of Adam and Eve to procreate and create the entire human race, they had to engage in incest?
Not only is it forbidden in the Bible, but it also creates a large chance for genetic disorder.
Also, how could we get the genetic variety that we have today from only two specimens?

Note: Since many people here don't seem to understand what I am talking about, I shall say it again:
I am saying that the children of Adam and Eve committed incest, not Adam and Eve personally.

People have varied explanations for it. Some involve God creating spouses for the children of Adam and Eve (particularly where Cain is concerned). Some involve genetics not becoming a huge problem for several generations. Some involve great scientific hullabaloos that I'm not even going to bother trying to reproduce here.

And then there are those of us who accept that the Genesis account is a myth.

I just gave you several possible explanations for your point, including the one that I find to be the most likely. What more do you want? For all of us to start blubbering like idiots and squawking "TEH BIBBLE SAYZ"?

Why? What purpose would that serve? Just to make certain Christians look bad?

Tough shit. Some of us actually know what we're talking about.

No. I want to hear how they explain it. You told your opinion. That is ok. But you are just one. And this is the second or third time that I have made this topic.

It may very well be the presumptuous attitude of your OP that drives them away.

actually it says that God didnt create any other humans, but when Cain is banished he goes to a region and meets with the people already there and has a wife from them. This is one of the main plot holes and destroys the credibility. Then again, the story is an explanation of suffering. I still dont give a shit though, there's no such thing as sin in my book.

Hm...so for the first account, I would think those spouses would be created after Adam and Eve, right? I've always wondered about that, myself.

you have two people (adam and eve). they start the entire human race. so therefore their children had to have sex with each other, because there were no other humans in the world.

yes, I think this is the logical explination

I would guess so. I, personally, don't think that Adam and Eve are literal historical figures, so I don't really have an opinion on it, but for people who do think that way, that's probably what they believe.

. . . Not that a question so old even dignifies a response when it has already been asked and answered a million times over the last couple thousand years.

But, for the sake of boredom.

The simplest and most obvious answer is that it isn't a literal account in the first place. Instead it's a parable that god created men and women not a single man and women. (or that he created life in general, along with all that is)

You seem to think that you can poke holes in all christian faith just by attacking the literal interpretations of an ancient folk story.

I mean it's absolutely too easy to win an argument with somebody who believes in literal interpretation of the bible, fundamentalist christians are by far the most ludicrous. Most christians don't even believe the bible in its entirety is a literal work. It can't be interpreted as such without you being completely insane.

But, just because it isn't literal doesn't mean that it somehow eliminates the entire religions credibility or the value of the message, noting seemingly apparent flaws in the bible isn't enough to undo the entire basis of christian faith.

Also:

If the children of adam and eve committed incest and even if that was a sin, the stories of the bible are filled with people going against the will of god. They ate the apple didn't they? I mean really come on. Pointing out that people did something that was bad, something that is a sin. Does not even have any relevance at all. It's no secret that human kind is flawed, it's a perpetual theme in christianity and in the bible that there is an inherent evil in humans, from the apple to incest isn't even a far stretch. It seems that we are naturally predisposed to committing sins, by its very design christianity claims all men to be sinners. As we are all a product of the original sin. We are incapable of not sinning. If all people on the earth are interrelated then we are all committing incest still. Procreation is by christian logic a sin, and as such nobody escapes sin. It is a belief that they can atone for their sins however. That Jesus gave his life to absolve humankind of its sin. That a main element in christianity is acceptance of human flaws, of the fact that we cannot escape sin, and that it is by our own choice that we choose to abstain from evil and save ourselves. It is in making that choice that christians gain their power of faith, it's where their solace lies.

So, is it really a flaw in the first place that people could be a product of sin?

. . . and as for this. As for the large chance of genetic disorders. The rate of birth defects between direct relatives is around 25%. So, every 1 in 4 children you produce out of incest might have a genetic disorder. That's not even bad odds, and taking into account the lack of medical science at the time Darwinism kinda wins out don't ya think? Only the strong would have survived and the rest would have been discarded so, it isn't all that big of a hill to climb. And, the whole how do we get so much variety out of two specimens. Well, since current science suggests that all of the magnificent biodiversity we have now was evolved from the same single cell organisms that was a really stupid question. It's called speciation and I'm pretty sure it covers it all. Of course that is if you accept evolution.

I hope that covers it. Oh, and I'm not a christian if that matters any.
