Online they might think it's a joke and say yes but in person they'll be like 'OMG I thought he was joking!' and most likely say no. But this doesn't always happen a guy asked my friend put by text and they lasted a few months.

In general, I tend to be more honest online. Then again, I live my life in a total bullshit mode meant to appease everyone else.

Online/texting is great but you can never tell how genuine people are, maybe hint you like someone online but if it's something really important ask them face to face? If someone said they liked me online I'd always wonder if it was just a joke..

It really depends on how often you speak to that person online. Usually the best way to tell somebody you like them, or want to go out with them, is through the same medium of communication you usually use to talk to each other. If it varies, or if you two talk online together quite a bit anyway, then telling her that you like her or want to go out would be perfectly acceptable, and to tell you the truth, a lot easier on your part. There's nothing more or less "genuine" about it than doing it in person, so long as you two have an ability to read, and by that I mean read between the lines.
