In my Geography of Peoples module, we have a very broad essay title:

Write an essay on the shaping of the cultural landscape of an area you are familiar with. Refer to administrative divisions, place names and the built environment.

Ive decided, after reading an article in the Telegraph stating that 16% of the British Army is composed of men with Irish passports. It inspired me to write an essay titled:

How British is Eireann?

Focusing on what areas in Ireland wanted to remain in the commonwealth, where the strongest nationalistic ties were before independance was gained. How street names after independance were named in Irish and now are in english and called in an english manner, i.e Tudor Lawns. Also on how in 1870 25% of the British Army was Irish. How after independance the administive system remained largely the same.

Just things like that. I asked my lecturer about it first and he said it was great to at least see one person thinking utside of the box and that he'd liek to correct it himself since its very interesting.

I showed him my introduction today, just to make sure I was on the right track, and he said I was, but he will have to correct it because a post-grad will almost certainly think Im writing an historical essay.

But, yeah Im a little worried that it will become an historical essay, and Ive got to keep it geographical - what relationship Irish people have with Britain now.

I think it sounds really, really interesting and would actually love to read it if you fancied letting me.

I agree with your lecturer about you thinking outside of the box. Sounds hugely interesting, so good luck writing it!
