How can you end an addiction if you get addicted to something else? Basically, your addiction has no ending yet. You're still addicted to something.

Generally: yes.

The quickest way to end an addiction is to replace it with a safer alternative that has similar actions of the original drug.

For example... Methadone is commonly prescribed as a replacement for people addicted to heroin but unable to quit. It is a safer alternative and allows the addict to lead a more normal life.

THe replacement drug would still fulfill both the psychological and physiological addiction, but would simply be safer.

You'll need to be more specific for me to offer a possible alternative if that's what you're looking for.

According to my psych professor, methadone is much stronger than heroine. I think there is psychoanalysis/psychotherapy that usually has to accompany this 'transfer of addiction' before an addict can successfully cease all psychoactive drug addiction. The flip side is, using this deductive chain of addiction transferal, you have to end somewhere. It seems likely in my mind that, once you're an addict, you've shown manifestation of a general addictive personality which will lead to you (generally) always needing a 'fix' of some sort. So, a successful heroine addict may eventually become an impulsive chewing gum or cigarette addict (most commonly the latter).
