An analogy. You've just obtained your driver's license and purchased your first car. You go to take it for a ride around town, but oh noes, your stepdad tells you you can't go for a drive around town, you have to stick to driving around the block. Never mind that you're legally an adult.

Then, just as you're about to get in the car, your stepdad jumps in ahead of you and drives it around, after you repeatedly tell him you want to be the first to drive it, given what a momentous occasion it is.

It's your first car, which you paid for, which represents your independence and transition into adulthood. To have someone just flagrantly shit all over you by taking control of your property is highly disrespectful.
