15-year-old boy has died after being shot in the chest on a Derby street.

Police said the boy was walking along Caxton Street in the Sunnyhill area of the city with friends at about 2120 GMT on Tuesday when he was shot.

He was taken to the Derbyshire Royal Infirmary for treatment but later died from his injuries.

Police said armed officers and police dogs searched for the offenders with the help of helicopter support but were unable to find them.

'Terrible tragedy'

Assistant Chief Constable Peter Goodman urged anyone who witnessed the shooting to come forward.

"This is a terrible tragedy in which a young teenager has lost his life.

"The public can rest assured that we are determined to bring the offenders to justice.

"Our thoughts are with his family at this difficult and distressing time."

James Barker, 60, a maintenance electrician for Rolls-Royce and who lives on Caxton Street, was at work at the time of the shooting.

He said his wife told him there had been a "drive-by shooting".

"When I came home from work this morning, at every entrance to the park there was a police car blocking it," he said.

Jill Walden, a spokeswoman for Derbyshire Police, said detectives were still trying to piece together what had happened.

She said: "We immediately sent armed officers and dog units and a police helicopter to the scene to search for the offenders but unfortunately they'd disappeared by the time we got there.

"We're remaining in the area today to carry out investigations, we'll be doing house-to-house inquiries."

Police are currently dealing with an incident on Osmaston Park Road in the Peartree area of the city, about three-quarters of a mile away from Caxton Street.

It it is unclear whether the two incidents are connected.

Assistant Chief Constable Goodman added: "I would urge anyone who witnessed the shooting, or anyone who may have information about the incident, to come forward.

"If people wish to pass on information anonymously, they can do so by ringing our call centre or the national charity Crimestoppers."

No disrespect to the lad, and it is sad and wrong.

But what are the chances this killing is gang related, drug related and the friends were late teenagers, maybe chavs?
