I am 38 weeks pregnant, and so incredibly uncomfortable. I bet you remember the feeling. How did you go into labor? Did your water break or contractions? Is there anything that happend a couple days before that you can remember? I just want to have my baby boy :)

I started having mild contractions on my due date, went in for my appointment, she said I'd started to dilate and I was in early labor.  They monitored me for a little while, but I wasn't progressing, so they sent me home.  After a week of early labor, my midwife did a sweep, and scheduled me to be induced for the following week.  I went one more incredibly uncomfortable week, then I went in for my appointment with my midwife to be examined before I was sent to the birth center to be induced.  My water broke on the exam table and I went into active labor (so I didn't have to be induced).  Six and a half hours later my daughter made her grand entrance.

I was crazy active and restless the day before. I spent the entire day cleaning my room, setting the crib up, getting all of her clothes washed and put way in her dressers, etc. And then I couldn't sleep at all. I was on the phone with her father from 9 until I started having my first contractions a little before 4 am. At first I thought I just had to poop, so I went to the bathroom like 9 times. And then I was like ooooh crap maybe this is it? So I told Jacob to get some sleep because I had a feeling today was going to be the day. So I woke my mom up at 6 and told her not to go to work, and we started counting my contractions. By 10 they had gotten 7 minutes apart so we packed up and headed off to the hospital. I was only dilated 1cm so once Jacob got to the hospital we walked around for an hour, and when I came back I was dilated to 3 cm. So we walked around for another hour and then they got me a bed and my epidural. About a half hour later my water broke and then labor went FAST after that, I started pushing less than and hour after my water broke and I only had to push for about 25 minutes.

The day i was going to get induced, about an hour or two before, i had gotten into the shower, and had cramping which i realised after i got to the hospital were contractions.

When i got hooked up to the monitor i was having contractions every 2--3 minutes.

After about an hour or two i was having them EVERY minute. They had to give me a shot to slow down the contractions and about 3 hours later, they gave me this gel, that was supposed to soften my cervix. Then they broke my water, and about 10 hours later i was having contractions about every minute for 5 hours. Got an epidural, then 5 hours later i had an emergency c-section.

And now i have a 6 day old little boy. And he's perfect.

I went into the hospital for my regular OB appointment and they ended up taking me to labor and delivery to induce me and dope me up on magnesium sulfate to lower my blood pressure. It was 160/101. I was in labor for three days. They broke my water and I dilated about 4 cm in the first 7 hours after my water broke and .5 cm the next two days. They took me in for a C-section on July 5th at 5:31 am my son was born.

I'm a guy but I'll share my story anyway because I think it's good information from a different perspective.  My wife had a similar situation to Chava's - her BP shot way up late in her pregnancy.  I took her in for her regular OB appointment which happened to be December 26, 2005.  The doctor checked her calendar and told us to report to the hospital on the 29th to be induced.  We both looked at each other in a little bit of shock - the baby wasn't due until January 18, but then the doctor explained to us that because of the high BP, and also because the baby looked to be very healthy and ready to be born, they wanted to get the baby out before my wife got sick.

So, we're thinking "ok, great - our daughter will be born on Dec. 29."  Wrong!!  What they didn't tell us was that my wife wasn't at all dilated, and in those cases induction can take a few days.  She had no sign of contractions when we checked in on the 29th.

So, there I was sitting in the hospital with her like a moron thinking she was going to have the baby any time now.  I didn't want to leave because I didn't want to miss the big moment, and my wife needed my company and support anyway.  She ended up having the baby by C-section at 4 AM on New Years Day.  I spent most of that time in the hospital with her, getting very little if any sleep (it's tough to sleep in a chair when you have doctors and nurses barging in every 10 minutes).  By the time our daughter was born, I was going on my 3rd full day without sleep.  My wife wasn't able to do much to care for the baby because she had just had major abdominal surgery (C-section), so I had to do almost everything.  No big deal - I love caring for our daugher and always have - but doing it on no sleep is a different story.  We both would have been far better off if I went home and got a few hours of sleep in the evenings instead of hanging around the hospital.  It was a very rough first night for all of us.

The moral of the story:  First of all, ask questions! You can never anticipate exactly what's going to happen when it comes to giving birth, but the more your doctors can explain to you ahead of time, the better off you'll be.

Second of all, giving birth is all about mother and baby (and rightfully so), but keep in mind that there's a father involved too, or if f not the father than hopefully some other birth coach, partner, parent, friend, etc. Once the baby comes, you need that person to be well rested enough to help you out. You will need all of the help you can get, especially if you have a C-section. Make sure this person has an opportunity to rest and get plenty of sleep before the birth, because he probably won't once the baby comes.
