Can't we all just get along?

Catherine Vogt, 14, is an Illinois 8th grader, the daughter of a liberal mom and a conservative dad. She wanted to conduct an experiment in political tolerance and diversity of opinion at her school in the liberal suburb of Oak Park.

She noticed that fellow students at Gwendolyn Brooks Middle School overwhelmingly supported Barack Obama for president. His campaign kept preaching "inclusion," and she decided to see how included she could be.

So just before the election, Catherine consulted with her history teacher, then bravely wore a unique T-shirt to school and recorded the comments of teachers and students in her journal. The T-shirt bore the simple yet quite subversive words drawn with a red marker:

"McCain Girl."

"I was just really curious how they'd react to something that different, because a lot of people at my school wore Obama shirts and they are big Obama supporters," Catherine told us. "I just really wanted to see what their reaction would be."

Immediately, Catherine learned she was stupid for wearing a shirt with Republican John McCain's name. Not merely stupid. Very stupid.

"People were upset. But they started saying things, calling me very stupid, telling me my shirt was stupid and I shouldn't be wearing it," Catherine said.

Then it got worse.

Maybe not, until you wear an Obama shirt.

People aren't tolerant of others' political opinions; I've had friends on Facebook tell me I'm an idiot because I voted for Obama.

It's just a universal truth about humanity, not something that's true only about one political party and not others. And also on the hypocrisy line that I'm sure will follow. Human beings are hypocrites, universally.

Yeah, that is fucked. However, they are in MIDDLE SCHOOL. I am sure the same happens if I were to wear an Obama shirt in Southern Mississippi. This topic is completely pointless because the exact reverse can be said about Conservatives.

I fail to understand your point, unless it is only to further defame Democrats by using your 'selective vision'.

Seriously, how long are you going to be bitter about the election? John McCain isn't...      so why are you?

What I love about this is that it shows the typical political/social view of 'you don't agree with my views that means your stupid'.

I notice more than a few people on here with a similar attitude, myself included.

I'm surprised you neo-cons didn't kill yourselves after the anti-Christ was elected.

I'm a little disappointed, actually.

Keep in mind these are probably largely 14 year old girls, a demographic where cliques and bitchiness hold a lot of sway.

A news-worthy item might have been a case-controlled double-blind test involving pyschologically analysing 2 groups (Obama voters and McCain voters) that showed there was a statistically significant difference between their scores in a tolerance test.

I don't doubt this is pretty prevelant in America, but to suggest this article is actually interesting is pointless mud-slinging we could only expect from before the election.

You get that from all sides. Hell, the College Republicans (a club on my campus) were downright cruel to people who didn't agree with them. It got as far as vandalization, and campus security and a few county sheriffs had to get involved.
