You know, I often wonder if a lot of our modern problems - suicide and depression, etc. result from today's world.

I wonder if we as humans are too far removed from our natural state. Our natural state being small bands of mobile hunter gatherers. Life has got easier and the suicide and depression rates have soared.

Theres no doubt that our bodies havent caught up with this evolution in lifestyle - for instance we still really like sweet foods, which stems to our hunter gatherer lifestyle where we needed as many berries and fruit in the summer as we could possibly get. That helped us 7,000+ years ago, now its killing us, literally. So who is to say our mind, not our brain, our mind hasnt caught up either.

You know, we work best in small teams where we depend on each other - look how the army works, look what happens in times of war. Soldiers group together through a campaign and help each other.

We have endorphomines released in our brains when we contribute to a team. W e rely on each other, and we need each other. And in times and societies where that existed/exists, depression and suicide are virtually non-existent.

That makes a hell of a lot of sense, actually.

Sometimes I wonder of going back to our "primitive" state. Or whatever you wish to refer to it as.

In my anthropology lectures, youd be murdered for calling previous times 'primitive'.

That word, in relation to humans, is out since the 1960's. Its not used anymore.

Which is why I shoved it in quotation marks.

I don't think when I'm at work What are they meant to be referred to as, then?

Theyre just different. Theyre no less intelligent than us, and no less sophisticated.

Theres no set word im aware of to describe them.

Ah, I see. Just "way back when"? haha. I would never have thought they're less intelligent. We've just changed our adaptation to the environment and added things such as technology.

I'd like to take current techonological factors out of my life and see if I COULD live. They should do that next, for a reality TV show. haha. But then it'd turn into BB =[

But I'd like to try living without all of this, personally I think I'd find it harder cope.

And I still worker better with a couple of people than lots of people. Either work environment or social environment.

It's certaintly true that it's easier to become isolated the more private a society you live in, and the Western one we have at the moment is extremely private. Loneliness is the biggest killer, as any healthcare proffessional will tell you.

I think we are getting less intelligent each passing generation.

Ironically, for the past week I've been pondering the notion of forming a village-like, self-sufficient community.. for the very same reason you're discussing. I, too, believe that MANY of our problems are based on the fact that we're just so far from nature, from the type of ecosystem our bodies have adapted to live in over millions of years.

I think the world would be better off if land were divided by ownership, not into states and countries, but into tribal-like communities that are self sufficient. This would eliminate many of the energy-wasting infrastructures that we currently depend on to maintain status quo............ gotta go to class

A person could not sustain life without human connection. Most would die off or go insane if they were forced to live a completely isolated life.

Those who do live an isolated life (maybe because they isolate themselves or others isolate them from society) that is when depression starts to kick in. The feeling of loneliness is one of the most dreaded human emotions, and this emotion can lead to death.
