The fact that it is based upon his prejudices and misconceptions rather than etymological precedent.

I find this kind of rubbish is largely a reaction to the recent influx of stupid, religion hating atheists. They fallaciously equate "religion" with "anything bad ever done in the name of certain religions". You know, the ones that think Christianity is false because the Crusades were unpleasant.

You can either point out the flaws in their logic, or you can weasel out of it with "fine, I'm not religious anyway: I have a personal relationship with Jesus".

The latter response is as infantile as the original argument, and those who cling to it should be smacked repeatedly with big, heavy dictionaries.

Semantics aside the point of the video I think is two fold.

1) To break down misconceptions about what christians believe. ie that they are saved by grace and love not by doing heaps of good stuff

2) To critique those who either think they are good enough that they dont need God or that they are so bad that God would never forgive them

You can replace Religion with rule-worship, meritism, legalism etc pertaining to God.

For mine the essence of Religion is about doing things, being religous.

Sure you could say it is about things pertaining to faith, absoulte truth, things not of this world. But it is the former that Driscoll hates.
