One thing that has been bugging me for ages.... is all these mental health labels... such as... Depression.... Anxiety.... Stress disorders.... ADD.... bipolar.....etc....

And then it hit me...... are these real?..... or are we just brainwashed into thinking that they are....

For example.... if your doctor diagnoses you with "depression"..... then you are going to actually believe that you are depressed.... making you feel depressed anyway....

So heres an idea....... for all of these people with mental disorders..... why dont you try waking up in the morning.... and telling yourself that you are going to have a fantastic day today......

I truely believe that if you train your brain to think positive thoughts.... then you will feel extremely positive as a person....

I used to have loads of labels..... but since ive changed my way of thinking..... I have a much better job.... I get on with my family a hell of a lot better.... my confidence has shot up..... and I truely believe that I can take on anything that the world has to throw at me!

Yeah you have a point =D

I think half of that shit is just excuses for plain awkward children who need a clip round the ear... or for older people who just need to be more positive like you said.

they are real. it depends on how someone was raised and the things they've been through. if u were abused or went through the death of a loved one u may develop one of those problems. u probably wouldn't understand unless u have one of those problems. i have depression and its real.

I agree and disagree. I believe that some people have a tendancy to be sadder than others, but I don't believe that it should restrict us and what we do. If we want to be happy, we don't need a doctor giving us drugs to do it. I'm in charge of my own mind. So perhaps the doctor is right - I'm more perceptible to bi-polar mood swings or have irradical thoughts, but it doesn't mean I'm not normal or anything is wrong with me. I'm in control of my own thoughts. If 70 percent of the population has a certain mental disorder - is it still a disorder? Or is it just part of being human?

Why must they try to make us all think & act & feel the same?

Yeah true.... you can't control the events of life itself...

BUT!

You can control how you respond to your own feelings.

I go though shit everyday.... and I just turn around and laugh at it!.... then I move on.

Yeah, how many people who have been diagnosed with those illnesses have actually had drugs that have properly worked for them?

True.... but my point is..... its all about what you believe about yourself...

I used to be depressed.... because I used to believe that I was...

It wasnt until I started telling myself how great I was.... that I actually started to feel great....

I just wish that other people who think they have got problems could "open there mind" like I have...

Getting over mental difficulties is actually so so so easy.... you just need to know how to do it....

Success doesnt come from "trying" to succeed....

It comes from "knowing" that you will.

Interesting topic. There are no brain scans that test whether someone has Clinical Depression and you are simply diagnosed by discussing your symptoms. However, many of the symptoms to Depression are similar "symptoms" to "diagnoses" like stress (especially the physical ones - headaches, stomach aches and tense muscles), low self esteem, or just plain lonliness/isolation. In this day and age, our life styles often lead toward feelings of stress, low self-esteem and lonliness and sometimes its hard to tell if you are actually "Clinically Depressed" or just stressed/lonley/underconfident because of your life style. I do believe Clinical Depression exists, however, it often gets misdiagnosed.
