If you don't want to read it all, I am just looking for opinions, should I join the Navy or stay in Community College and get a two year degree? Lately I have been thinking about joining the Navy, I just turned 18 in August and I'm about to finish my first year of schooling at a community college. I really do like college but I am begging to question just how far a two year degree will get me.
So anyway a little history.. I have been studying C++ since I was about 14 years old, I am very familiar with the Windows environment and I have been working with Linux since I was 16. I am also pretty knowledgeable with hardware. I built my computer around the same time I got into C++ I have a huge love for computers. They are my life and I also want to do something meaningful with my life.
Anyway I was looking at the careers section on the Navy's website and there are a few that really interest me. The one that really stuck out at me was Information Warfare which I think would be an amazing field to go into.
Now... why I am having doubts...
First of all, signing the next four years of my freedom away to the government isn't exactly appealing to me. Especially now that the country is beginning to see where George Bush was leading us this whole time.
Second, my girlfriend is an emotional wreck and she is scared to death that I am going to join a branch of the military, get shipped to Iraq, then shot. I don't think I would really feel safe joining without putting her in some type of counseling program or something.
Third, Getting shot scares me.. watching an enemy missile close in on the boat I'm on scares the living crap out of me.
So, Community College or the Navy?
