Get a PC. Despite lots of people bagging Windows, it is still the most used operating system. 90% of programs you will find on the internet will be Windows only. Windows is familiar to you, I'm assuming. Just get XP though, Vista apparently has some bugs.

The MacBook Air isn't meant to replace a real desktop, or even a laptop. It's made for people who travel a lot, and that's really it's main purpose. I have a MacBook, and while Macs have many advantages over PCs, they lack simple programs such as Paint and unless you buy the package that allows you to view Word Documents and the likes, you have to open files differently than just clicking on them and you have to convert most files into Word forms for your teachers. If you get a Mac, make sure to buy the iWork package. You'll need it.

If it's for photos, I think a Mac would be your best bet. Please, please, don't get a MacBook Air. They're really not that great. If you're using it for photos, you're probably going to wanna pop in a CD once in a while. Guess what? You can't! Know why? It doesn't have a CD drive! You have to buy one separately! Also, it has only ONE USB port, and the hubs don't work very well. Also, NO ETHERNET PORT! There's VERY limited connectivity. And if your RAM, battery, harddrive, etc. decides to stop working, the components are non-user replaceable, which means you have to send it to Apple or wherever to get it fixed. And that 3 hour battery life and so great either. Just get a PC, or some other type of MacBook.

From my experience, media editing and the like is typically easier on a mac. I'm a PC guy though, and the mac prevents me from doing some very simple things that I enjoy and simply don't have the patience to relearn how to do (so I end up opening up the terminal which thankfully functions unlike Windows's). It depends on what you're used to. If you can do macs, and plan on doing photographic stuff and other media editing or the like, get the mac. If you're a windows type, or want to use the computer for gaming or other things, get the PC. If you cannot decide, try working with both operating systems (friends, libraries, schools, etc) and deciding which one you feel more comfortable with.
