My friends and I went to Newport earlier this week and I got to fiddling with my camera. The one above is one of the pictures I took, and there are more like that. But is there any way to not only capture silhouettes? Like, is there some sort of setting I need to get the faces of the people instead of shadow looking things?

I've got a Nikon D40.

well for 1, you have the subjects facing towards the sun so that any light is going onto them, and isn't behind them. and for how dark it seems right there, you'd probably want to have your aperture set rather high, a flash would help too.

I tried flash, but that completely blackened the background. I didn't bother with the aperture though. I'll definitely try that out next time. Thanks, Reev.

I don't know the D-40 but it seems all you really need is some fill flash (small amount on the front of your subject in this case) or full flash which would illuminate them more but may de-emphasise or wash out the background.  I assume the problem was either that the flash was off or not on the right setting.

Full flash absolutely killed the background, yeah, so I just just turned that off. I'm not sure about this fill flash though. I'll check my manual and see how that goes. Thank you!

use flash on a fairly weak setting to fill it in slightly? actually i have a feeling that the 'night' setting on them works okay on shots like this. obv you could shoot from another angle, so not against the light, but then you wouldn't have the pretty background.
