--Students talk, whisper, and giggle during class, being completely disrespectful to the teacher.

--Students are on their laptops during class, visiting sites like Facebook and doing other non-class related tasks that are quite obvious.

--Students begin to rudely and loudly pack up their belongings five minutes before class is over, disrespectfully rushing the prof to finish the lecture.

This is only for private college students, as I am in a community college now and transferring to a private, non-state college next fall. I experience all of the above constantly, in every class every day, and I am quite sick of it. I want to know if this is what it is like for the average private college student. Thanks! :)

Also, please describe the option you chose. I would like to hear some specific situations. And if I forgot an option -- sorry! Just explain.

Nice. I am just hoping that private college students are more mature and serious than community college students. I don't mind my school (the professors are pretty good for a community college), but I think my college next fall will be much more suitable for the student that I am.

I just feel like no one around me at school takes anything seriously. People don't study for tests, don't do their homework, frequently skip class and when they do come are extremely rude, laugh when the profs ask them questions, etc. The list goes on and on...

I want to be around other like-minded students, not a bunch of high schoolers (no offense).

sounds like the kids were raised in rich families were they were never expected to do anything. i went to a christian school through middle school and even the seniors were disrespectful to the teachers.

Ugh, that sounds about right. Or they just think it's "cool" to not give a shit. Most of these people are fresh out of high school, so they're still stuck in that whole clique-y stage. No offense if you're a high school student, but I'm sure you know what I mean. There are some students who think they're just "too cool for school."

to answer your questions:
-obviously depends on the size/format of the class. just yesterday i went from a large, yet classroom-style class to a giant lecture hall. in the first class, side-conversations hardly occur, in the giant lecture hall, they do occur. but not by much (although a couple girls in the row ahead of me were told to shut up because they were being obnoxious and loud)

-i do this, but in large, lecture-type classes. never paid an ounce of attention in my intro to study of women and gender lectures last year, at least i'm courteous and sit in the very back of the class. by the way, i don't get what's the problem with students who do it? the prof may or may not notice and probably doesn't care either way, and you as a student need to get your nose out of other students' affairs, unless they are just being really obnoxious about it.

-depends on the professor. some are just too intimidating to do that to, or you feel so much pity for them in the last minutes as they so sorrowfully try to finish their lectures as the minutes edge closer to the end of class. personally i'm not one to do it, or i try to do it as discreetly as possible and not make a big production out of it.

sorry, you're just going to encounter this everywhere. granted, it isn't that bad, at all. but it's not like it's completely avoidable.

community college is a bit harder, because in most cases it just seems to be an extension of high school ("13th grade"). i hear that that goes away if you take night classes, that more people take their shit seriously, for whatever reasons (most likely because they are adult professionals, and are older and more mature).

This bothers me in really small classes. I guess it doesn't matter in large lectures, but when I'm in a class of 10-15 people in a small classroom, it's quite obvious even to the teacher what the student is doing and it just bothers me. It's distracting to me, especially when they're sitting near me. I'm not trying to butt into other peoples' business obviously, that's silly, but when they're distracting/bothering me and being blatantly rude to the prof (their disrespect is distracting to me, believe it or not). Otherwise, if they don't want to learn, that's their own problem.

I understand that I'll probably encounter it everywhere. I'm a tough young woman; pretty sure I can handle it. However, I'm curious about some of the differences between community college and private college students, if there are any. It gets tiring day after day being surrounded by lazy, disrespectful students (hardly anyone to have intelligent conversations with, as well) and I want to know if I can look forward to a bit more positive environment next year.

After all, I believe that the environment in which you go to school in affects your learning. And when I'm surrounded by those who don't give a fuck, there's definitely a negative aura just about everywhere at school.

it really depends on where you are. we go here because we want to. community college students go because they feel they are supposed to. it's all self-motivated, more or less.

i mean there are some dumbass girls here but a lot of them are also going here cos of daddy's money, or they're legacies, etc. i mean i feel pretty dumb sometimes here, but i do end up having engaging and intelligent conversations with my friends all the time. and we never fucking stop talking about school which is something i do and i hate doing it (like when i'm drunk at a party trying to talk to girls, then i say something about it and say how i hate doing it, then we have a laugh)
