There's a girl (I've posted about her a few times) in my year who was bulimic in year 10 (we are now in year 12), got help, came back in year 11 all high and mighty about how much she had been through (Ugh, she was only actively bulimic for about a month, hardly suffering).

I am now in her English class. So today we were discussing whether you can blame the parents for a child being sexually abused (a la 'The God of Small Things') and she went off on one about how that would be like blaming her parents for her ED, because apparently 'eating disorders are caused by the media'... what the fuck? No they are not! There are many other (larger) factors! And I tried to argue with her but she shot me down with a 'this is what I learnt in therapy'--- bitch, just because I'm not all high and mighty about it doesn't mean I'm not a sufferer (she has hinted that she suspects I am, and pointed at the red/purple bracelets when she passed me)...

Gah, I wish I could have said something but unlike some I don't believe in bragging about my weaknesses. And, as Dorothy Parker said "Spilling one's guts is as ugly as it sounds"

Sorry for the rant

Kind of off topic, but no, you can't blame parents for child sexual abuse, unless of course they are the ones sexually abusing the child.

That was what we all said.Though I pointed out that the child in question had been taught nothing about 'stranger danger', just that he had to respect adults and do what he was told.

Your right. Today many people like to try and get attention by telling people all the crap they've been through and acting like they're the only people in the world that have ever suffered. These are the people you just have to sit back and laugh at because obviously they have nothing better to do with their lives.

I think I agree with you.

Your eating disorder isn't a very suitable topic for casual conversation.

I agree with you that I HATE the way Eating Disorders are blamed on the media. I acknowledge that the media can be a contributing factor to lowering a persons self-esteem when they are bombarded with unrealistically perfect images BUT I also know that Eating Disorders are so much deeper than that

My eating disorders have been cause by a mix of media and the idea that skinniness is beautiful, and in part by my mother, and in part by my friends, and in part by my stress, and in part by my "love life."

Every person's ED is going to be caused by something different, and maybe her's was the media. You have no right to judge her and tell her that the media wasn't the cause of her ED.

And about her "not suffering in one month of bulimia", who are you to say that she didn't suffer? I've only made my self throw up a few times, under ten probably, to lose weight and those are single-handedly the worst moments of my life. Its like nothing else. And she SHOULD be proud that she overcame something that great.

If you have truly suffered from something, you wouldn't use it as a source of attention and talk about it all the time.

Well thats way better then bottling it up inside because  if you do keep it all inside it can destroy you completely.
