every day i cant help but imagine my self being the person that has achieved all of her goals and some. I imagine me being a completely different person the same age as i am now. But then i come back to reality and get depressed as hell because i'm so far behind my dreams and goals. today was the worst-i almost started crying. I wish there was a way for me to stop dreaming so big-but that's realistically impossible...right?

I just want to know if anyone else does this-i dont want to talk to my friends about it because i dont want to seem like some stupid whiner.

there is nothing wrong with dreaming big. I am very motivated to be successful in life and I am beginning to get there. If you try hard enough and persist in your goals, you will get there one day. Keep trying, if you give up then you will never succeed

I've had my own issues with the crappiness of reality as opposed to the awesomeness of my expectations and daydreams. Sadly, it turned me into a pessimist who refuses to be the least bit optimistic, only so I won't be let down. I'm trying to rewire my thinking, years and years of reinforced behavior...so yeah, I think I have an idea of what you're talking about

u've got the rest of your life ahead of you and plenty of time to achieve your goals. use all the time u can to work for them and one day they will be reached

i feel the same way sometimes

i want to be a music composer. do u know how rediculously hard it is to make decent money off of composing? you have to be reeeeaaaally good. i also want to write a musical (theatre geek here lol) and that's a very far-fetched dream too.

but did eric whitacre become a world-renowned modern composer through worrying about whether he could make it? noooo

did steven sodheim write musicals thinking they could never go anywhere? noooooo

you just have to work for it

i get discouraged all the time when i think too hard about my dreams. so i have to make myself stop and realize that things take time and i have to use all my time to get better at my choice of profession

i'm attending college majoring in music and minoring in theatre. everyday is another step toward my goals

please just enjoy life and always remind yourself to work for what you want

the more you work for them, the less unlikely they seem to you :D

just be strong :}

Yeah.. I look at how much I've slacked off.. how many mistakes I've made.. how many things I wish I could change... Makes me realize that I have quite possibly fucked up my entire life because of procrastination and stupidity early in life.

I used to all of the time, and like you, I had reality slap me in the face as well. I don't have "the answer,", per se, but perhaps I can give you something to chew on.

First, it seems that the ultimate goal in life is to be happy, right? Assuming this is true, let's move on to a few quotes I found..
"You will never be happy if you continue to search for what happiness consists of. You will never live if you are looking for the meaning of life." - Albert Camus

"Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful." - Albert Schweitzer

And last, but not least, a quote from someone you may actually recognize: "If a man is called to be a street sweeper, he should sweep streets even as Michelangelo painted, or Beethoven composed music, or Shakespeare wrote poetry. He should sweep streets so well that all the hosts of heaven and earth will pause to say, here lived a great street sweeper who did his job well." - Martin Luther King Jr.

You may not get your big dreams, sorry... in truth, I'm only left with wanting to rule the world. So I say, dream realistically first, then dream BIG.

Set your goals....  then figure out the 101 steps it takes to get there.  Start with the small first one that you CAN do.  One step at a time.  AND NEVER give up on your dreams.

Yeah, I get that.

Nothing wrong with dreaming big but having overly high expectations for yourself sucks . It happens to a lot of people though, because you want to avoid looking at the reality so you don't even try, and instead you escape by getting lost in your head and that leads to minimal productivity which makes it worse.

It's the "if I can't have it all I shouldn't even bother" attitude. Like ok for me it's like with college, I know I can't get into an Ivy League school or anything like that that I wanted when I was younger and worked really hard in school, so now I feel like, fuck it, going to a state school would feel so degrading when I could've done better. Logically though I know that I'll be at least better off going to a state school than dropping out and getting a job now, and those are my only options at the moment. But then I look at my sisters school and I see that there's a point in going to college besides just getting a great job afterwards, I can go to college for the sake of college being fun and enjoy it that way.

That's what you should probably do, work to do as much as you can now at least for the sake of the experience and don't get caught up thinking about where you'll be in ten years. You never know what'll happen.

Well it seems to me like having high aspirations and goals can only be a good thing. Sometimes it does need a bit of compromise, but it's good you're aiming high.

It's not impossible to stop dreaming big, but I don't think that that's what you're really after. I think you're dissapointed that what you hope for and what you can/are achiev(ing) are so different. Dream big, but also work hard on getting things done towards that end...and, understand that making big things happen requires small steps. Even little things towards your desired end are victories. Don't let it discourage you that what you want is still distant. Be encouraged by every step you make in the right direction.

Everyone has dreams. If you workk hard enough for what you want you can get there! I was told that I'm never going to get anywhere in life, I dropped out of school, did an easy year of college, all for nothing. But now I have a good life, happy with a partner, a job with a promising future all because I worked hard for it.
So no matter how big your dreams are, work for them. You will never know if you don't try. Everyone started somewhere, they didn't become famous or get rich overnight.
Stick in there and make the best of it.
Success is how far you bounce when you've hit rock bottom.
