I've been wanting to know, is college in the US anything like the common portrayal on TV here?  And what is the whole deal with fraternities and sororities and the whole greek system?  It seems trivial to me! I live in Australia btw.

Most colleges have a greek system, but you don't have to join them. there are a variety of fraternities and sororities, some are fun, games, and parties, while others focus on academics.

and what is the common portrayal on TV of the colleges there?

Frats and sororities are like on campus clubs that are mostly about partying and drinking Besides that I really dunno how it's portrayed in other countries..

yer thats pretty much what we see.  the two types of frats and sororities are party and nerdy houses.  we see it just as either a sexfest or dorkfest.  i've been watching the tv series GREEK so most of that is what we see here.

in australia some universities have colleges within them, which are kind of like fraternities and sororities, except much much larger, yet still party hard lol.

It greatly depends on the type of school you go to. For example, large public universities, I think, tend to be more of the stereotypical U.S. college with the tons of drinking and partying. Schools like Arizona State and Ohio State are known as big party schools.

I go to a much more academically-inclined school with a mid-sized population, and it's definitely not like "Van Wilder" or anything. In fact, a latest student body survey revealed that half of us had not had sex this semester, and that nearly 90% have had only 1 partner. So binge-drinking and random sex do not really exist that much at my school, despite our reputation for extreme liberalness.

i dont think academically inclined is positively correlated with prude in general for us colleges. many of the ivies and other top colleges are rather scandalous and booze-heavy
