Doesn't bother me. I have a passport.

Yeah but it's the principle of what they want to do. They are doing it so that they can get more information on their citizens which they are going to put into a surveillance database.

They are then going to monitor who buys pay as you go phones and possibly wire-tap them to make sure they aren't terrorists.

Again. Unless I suddenly have the urge to become a terrorist, I'm not bothered.

What if terrorist becomes you? Laws can change; next week you could find that posting on teen sites is made illegal, retroactively, and that the cops are bashing your door down.

So you're concerned about the response of the politically ignorant, naive and pre-pubescent children that probably don't even know how the house of commons and lords function at all? Great.

All the response is showing that they need to be more versed in privacy rights and politics.

My generation doesn't appear to give a shit about their, or my, civil liberties. I find that rather terrifying, actually.

Intrude on your privacy like what?
Asking you to prove that you are who you claim to be?

In regards to CCTVs, I meant the privacy.

As for buying a mobile phone, introducing this stupid legislation is absolutely stupid. It will simply angry people because they won't carry their passports with them, having to go back and get it, to prove something they do already with their driver's licences.

It just unnecessarily complicates things. Terrorists will get ahold of mobile phones and disposable accounts, this won't stop them. There are so many offers by Orange, O2 and the like to get free Pay as You Go SIM cards, it's unreal. They probably have a whole stash anyway.

They also communicate via the Internet, encrypted radio, etc. This is a stupid step which will aggravate the public and will hardly help in catching terrorists at all.

It's pointless, and why the hell should I have to carry around my passport to buy a phone, when you can just get old or used ones on the market, an easy way around for terrorists, it's not like they'll be new £300 phones anyway.

Statistically irrelevant? 7/7 save us...

52 people died, out of a population of well over 50 million. Statistically irrelevant indeed.

Ok, let's have it your way. Let's get rid of this stupid 'ID' stuff.
 CCTV? No need for it!
Police records? Get rid of it!

 Chaos ensues...

Records for criminals? Great.

Records for law abiding citizens? Fuck off.

You act as if there's a clear line between 'criminal' and 'law-abiding citizen'. One could become another at any given moment.

Bottom line, I don't see the big deal with the passport thing. They already do it in France...No 'V for Vendetta' sitch going on over there.

It is quite disconcerting, but you mustn't let LiveWire give you the impression that these are the opinions of the average Briton, because, as far as opinion polls go, I believe that the majority do care about not getting into a Orwellian state of living.

They could, but they're not. That's a huge difference. As soon as the line is crossed, it's fine for them to do it, but they better not even dare try to do it before. I've done nothing wrong so they shouldn't be keeping tabs on me. As soon as I break the law, I give away that freedom, and that's fine. But not a single second before.

Just because the line can be crossed doesn't mean it isn't there, and is crystal clear.

I haven't got a passport at the moment. I need to get one incase I have to go overseas, but unless you travel internationally you don't need one.

And to the person who lost your passport - thats REALLY bad.

Funny how you chose to go on a paranoia fueled ranted at one part of my reply, but wouldn't dare look at the other part.
I will repeat myself.

Aren't teenagers traditionally the fiery revolutionaries ranting about the evils of establishment?

If Wakeupcall is apathetic at this age, he'll be beating my head in with a truncheon at 25.

I've never heard the "everything France does is automatically okay" argument before, but I'm damn sure it's a logical fallacy.

We should come up with a name for it. Who knows Latin?

"they do it in country [x] so it's fine here" is not a valid argument. Moreover what works for one country might not work for the other. Should England get the Euro just because France find it okay? Of course not, it will devastate to our economy, we're hardly the same as France. Just because China is still in (mostly) one piece even with their totalitarian government doesn't mean that other countries should start practising the same way. Learn some common sense and logic.

I'm not saying everything France does is Ok, but I am saying we've already seen this passport thing happen in things such as Norway, France, Australia, Thailand, Denmark...

Honey, everything's Ok.
