So im going to be applying to universities next year and im feeling majorly depressed because it had been my intention to move out and really experience college life.

But now it seems like thats not going to be an option cause my mom is going super-depressed threathening to move out of the country, making me feel like absolute shit!

Shes a single mom and she doesnt really have any friends so me and my other sister (who was planning to move out as well) is all that she has. Plus her grandma...

What do you guys think? I know its common for moms to feel this way but its a little different as shes foreign and she never expected that her children would ever leave her (until they got married). But im not sure if i want to spend four years of my univeristy life like i did my highschool you know. Honestly shes so strict she wont let us do anything, going out like once month, no dating no nothing! Im 18 and my curfew is ten (if she lets me out)...

blah sorry for the big rant, but do you guys think i should just sacrafice this for her? since she did move all the way here for us ????

i wanted freedom, bound and restricted, i tired to give you up
but im addicted.

I personally don't think you should sacrifice this for her. This is your future, what you have left of your childhood, the best times of your life.

She's a mother, naturally she's going to be upset about her children finally leaving the nest. My mom never straight up told me she was against me going away to school but you could always tell she was pretty upset about it.

But they have to learn to get over it, kids leave the house eventually, it's part of being a parent.

I think everyone should go away to college if possible. You get so much freedom, you can experience so much, etc. I love college and I'm just a big advocate of going where you truly want to be. Your mother might be really upset now but I'm pretty sure she'll get over it.

...i wish that was that case. but like i said shes foreign she doenst really understand the concept of moving out. and shes making it VERY well known that she doesnt want me to go etc, crying fists. im just scared cause she is depressed. but she hasnt taken her meds in a long time.

My mother is foreign too and I understand their thickheaded-ness and general non understanding of our culture.

Yeah you should be concerned about your mothers feelings in a way, like make sure she takes her medication and what not. But I really really don't think you should let her stop you from doing what you want.

I know in a perfect world you would love to but at the end of the day I guess you just have to do what feels right. It is your decision though, not really hers.

it's important to make yourself happy, she'll understand that she cant reply on you alone for company and she needs to let you out and live your life.
